Alexandra Poole - Student Researcher and Epilepsy Advocate
Alexandra Poole is a high school student from Denham Springs, Louisiana, living with epilepsy and passionate about improving the quality of life for others with epilepsy. From a diagnosis at the age of two, she has learned to thrive in spite of her condition and uses her story to promote awareness and hope for the community.
Inspired by her own experiences, Alexandra designed an AP Research study exploring how music, and its link to serotonin regulation, may affect the cognition and emotional well-being of people with epilepsy. The student-led project explores how factors like music use, mood, and coping may influence quality of life, with the goal of inspiring future research and conversations about supplemental, holistic approaches to epilepsy support.
Alexandra is currently inviting people with epilepsy to take part in a brief online survey connected to her research. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and is designed to assist in better understanding how music and mood relate to life with seizures. Those who are interested in learning more or participating can find details and a survey link on this page, as approved by Epilepsy Awareness of America.
Looking ahead, Alexandra plans to pursue a career in Neurology, with a concentration in neuroaesthetics. Through her partnership with Epilepsy Awareness of America, she hopes to share her research, support awareness events, and encourage people with epilepsy to see their stories as a source of resilience and hope.
